In process industry and environmental monitoring, robust and reliable communication between field devices (e.g. transmitters, sensors, analyzers) and control systems (e.g. MES) is absolutely mandatory to ensure safe and continuous plant and site operation. The internationally accepted standard is analogue communication with the 4-20 mA protocol; it is established in most branches of industry. However, with the rapid advance of digitalization, more advanced communication protocols such as OPC UA, Modbus and NAMUR’s NOA are attracting the attention of industrial operators.
